What the great migration is?

The great annual wildebeest migration is a natural cycle of life that occurs every year. From between January and March each year, millions of wildebeest give birth to their young in the Serengeti game reserve in Tanzania and then gradually begin their move Westwards to the Grumeti River which is teeming with crocodiles eagerly awaiting the wildebeest are the months of June.
Here the spectacle of thousands of wildebeest filled with fright and charged with adrenaline plunging into the Grumeti River as they try to avoid the snapping jaws of crocodiles and the strong currents of the river is one of the most thrilling wildlife experiences. After crossing the River due the sheer number of the wildebeest, those animals that were lucky enough are faced with another battle – the prides of lions, leopards, hyenas and cheetahs across the river are anticipating their arrival. The animals that are the strongest and quickest will be the ones to make it to the Masai Mara game reserve in Kenya around the months of July and September. These movements are determined by the rains which bring the fresh grass that the Wildebeest and the Zebras and other herbivores that migrate with them seek.
The wildebeest and the other herbivores that migrate with them stay in the Masai Mara till the months of November and then begin their journey back to the Serengeti in December where the whole cycle begins all over again.

The Best time to watch the wildebeest migration - Maasi Mara

As mentioned earlier the wildebeest migration is a natural cycle of life dependent on the unpredictable climatic conditions of the savannah region. The fact that the rains hence the availability of green grass is quite unpredictable makes this phenomenon had to predict as well. It is advisable to ask your tour operator for the exact dates of the movements of the wildebeest prior to your travel. The wildebeest will generally make their move to the Masai Mara around August although this can be as early as July and will graze the plains till the months of November before making the trek back to the Serengeti between the months of December and January.
